Overview

Ischemic myocardium refers to heart muscle that is not receiving adequate blood flow and oxygen due to blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. This results in impaired heart function and may cause symptoms such as chest pain (angina), arrhythmias, or heart failure. If prolonged, ischemia causes irreversible myocardial cell death (infarction). The clinical management of myocardial ischemia focuses on rapidly restoring oxygen supply (through medications or surgical intervention), minimizing tissue damage, and preventing complications such as heart failure or arrhythmias.

Mechanism of action

Restoration of blood flow (reperfusion: PCI, CABG, thrombolysis); Reduction of cardiac workload (beta-blockers, nitrates); Prevention of clot expansion (antiplatelet, anticoagulant therapies); Cardioprotection (metabolic modulation, experimental approaches like ischemic preconditioning/reperfusion injury attenuation)

03

Biological functions
