Overview

Myocardial tissue, also known as cardiac muscle tissue or myocardium, is the specialized muscle tissue that forms the thick middle layer of the heart wall. It is unique to the heart and is responsible for its contractile function, enabling blood circulation throughout the body. Its highly organized structure enables efficient involuntary contractions coordinated through specialized cellular junctions. It relies on a robust extracellular matrix for support but can undergo pathological remodeling—such as fibrosis—in disease states due to activated fibroblasts depositing excess collagen. Key molecular markers associated with pathology include FAP and α-SMA expression on activated fibroblasts/myofibroblasts within injured myocardium.
