Myocardial tissue, when referenced in the context of "contrast enhancement," refers to the heart muscle as visualized and characterized using imaging modalities—primarily cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT)—after administration of a contrast agent. The contrast agent, typically gadolinium-based for MRI or iodine-based for CT, accumulates differentially in myocardial tissue depending on its physiological and pathological state. This differential accumulation allows clinicians to assess myocardial viability, detect fibrosis, inflammation, edema, infarction, and other pathologies.
Contrast enhancement highlights differences between normal and abnormal myocardial tissue by altering signal intensity on imaging. Gadolinium-based agents shorten T1 relaxation time in MRI; areas with higher concentrations appear hyperintense. Iodinated agents increase attenuation on CT; delayed washout indicates abnormal tissue characteristics.
