Myoglobin (MB)

Target
MB
Molecular classification
Protein, Oxygen-binding protein
01

Overview

Myoglobin is a small, globular protein found primarily in the striated (skeletal and cardiac) muscles of vertebrates. It serves as an oxygen-storage unit, providing oxygen to working muscles and facilitating oxygen transport within muscle cells. Muscle injury can cause release into blood; elevated levels serve as an early biomarker for acute muscle damage or rhabdomyolysis. Excessive circulating myoglobin can be nephrotoxic if not cleared efficiently by kidneys.
