Myosin heavy chain 1 (MYH1) is a major contractile protein found primarily in fast skeletal muscle fibers in humans. It forms part of the hexameric myosin molecule composed of two heavy chains and four light chains. MYH1 is responsible for converting the chemical energy of ATP into mechanical force for muscle contraction, specifically contributing to the contractile properties of type IIx (fast-twitch) muscle fibers. MYH1 plays a crucial role in skeletal muscle function, and its distribution is used as a marker for muscle fiber type. Mutations or dysregulation of MYH1 are associated with various congenital myopathies and muscular diseases.
