MYL5
Molecular classification

Overview

Myosin light chain 5 (MYL5) is a phosphorylatable regulatory light chain of the hexameric ATPase cellular motor protein myosin. It is involved in the regulation of myosin function, important for muscle contraction and actin cytoskeleton-dependent processes. MYL5 localizes to mitotic spindle poles and is necessary for proper cell division, contributing to spindle assembly, chromosome congression, and segregation. It binds calcium and contains EF-hand domains, and is expressed in fetal muscle, adult retina, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. MYL5 variants have been implicated in Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy and are being investigated as a possible prognostic marker in breast cancer
