Myosin light chain 6 is a myosin alkali light chain that forms part of the larger myosin hexameric ATPase motor protein complex, which is integral for force generation and motility in both smooth muscle and a wide variety of non-muscle cells. MYL6 is a non-phosphorylatable regulatory light chain that does not bind calcium and participates in the structural and functional regulation of myosin II, supporting cytoskeletal integrity and cell movement. The MYL6 gene is ubiquitously expressed, especially in smooth muscle and non-muscle tissues, and multiple transcript variants exist. No direct drugs or targeted therapies are currently available for this protein. Note: MYL6 should not be confused with myosin light chain kinase (MYLK), which is an enzyme and a known therapeutic target in some disease contexts.
