Myosin light chain 6B pseudogene

Molecular classification
Other (pseudogene)
01

Overview

This entity is a pseudogene derived from the functional "myosin light chain 6B" (MYL6B) gene, which encodes a myosin alkali light chain expressed in both smooth muscle and non-muscle tissues and participates in cytoskeletal and muscle contraction processes[2][3]. The pseudogene itself does not code for a functional protein due to frameshift mutations and premature stop codons, but it can be actively transcribed in certain neoplastic (cancerous) tissues. Overexpression of the corresponding pseudogene transcript can negatively regulate the expression of the functional MYL6B/MYLK gene, thereby promoting increased cell proliferation in cancer by decreasing MLCK RNA stability, according to recent studies[1]. Although it shows biological activity at the transcript level, the pseudogene does not classify as a canonical therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor. Instead, its main significance may be as a regulatory element or biomarker involved in oncogenic regulation, rather than a druggable target itself[1].
