Myosin light chain kinase pseudogene 1 (MYLKP1) is a transcribed pseudogene related to the active MYLK gene. It does not encode a functional protein but has been found to regulate the stability of MYLK mRNA, suppressing expression of the smooth muscle myosin light chain kinase. MYLKP1 is transcriptionally upregulated in several cancer types and promotes increased cell proliferation by decreasing smMLCK expression. While not a protein-coding gene or classic therapeutic target, it may serve as a candidate biomarker or a potential novel non-coding RNA target, especially in oncology research, due to its regulatory roles and association with tumorigenesis.
