NPL pseudogene 1 (NPLP1) is a pseudogene derived from the NPL gene, which encodes N-acetylneuraminate pyruvate lyase, an enzyme involved in sialic acid metabolism. Pseudogenes like NPLP1 typically do not encode functional proteins but may regulate their parental genes or other cellular pathways through the generation of non-coding RNAs, such as lncRNAs, or by serving as miRNA sponges (competitive endogenous RNAs).
