NPL pseudogene 1 (NPLP1) is a pseudogene derived from the NPL gene, which encodes N-acetylneuraminate pyruvate lyase, an enzyme involved in sialic acid metabolism. Pseudogenes like NPLP1 typically do not encode functional proteins but may regulate their parental genes or other cellular pathways through the generation of non-coding RNAs, such as lncRNAs, or by serving as miRNA sponges (competitive endogenous RNAs). No evidence exists that NPLP1 functions as a traditional drug or disease target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter, and it is not known to be associated with any approved drugs or used as a clinical biomarker.
