Overview

N-acetylneuraminic acid phosphatase (NANP) is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of N-acylneuraminate 9-phosphate (Neu5Ac-9-P) to form N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac, also known as sialic acid) and inorganic phosphate[6][4][5]. Sialic acid is an essential monosaccharide involved in glycosylation and the terminal modification of a wide range of glycoconjugates important for cell-cell interaction, protein stability, and pathogen recognition[6]. NANP belongs to the haloacid dehalogenase-like hydrolase (HAD) superfamily and is expressed in the cytosol of human cells[6][4]. Disease associations include balanoposthitis and uterine inflammatory disease, but its role in major human pathologies or as a therapeutic target is not well established[4]. This enzyme is also identified by several aliases linked to its gene symbol (NANP), as well as older genome annotation entries[4][6]. There are no known drugs or clinical biomarkers directly targeting NANP as of current knowledge.
