Overview

N-acetyltaurine is a small endogenous molecule formed by acetylation of taurine. Its molecular formula is C₄H₉NO₄S and it appears as a white or off-white solid[1][2][5]. Found in human blood and urine, N-acetyltaurine can increase after alcohol ingestion or metabolic stress (such as ketoacidosis)[7]. It is not a protein, enzyme, receptor, or transporter and lacks well-characterized signaling or enzymatic functions. N-acetyltaurine can serve as a minor carbon or nitrogen source for microbes and may be deacetylated by specific amidases in some tissues[1][7]. It is a metabolic derivative of taurine and does not play a direct role as a drug target or clinical therapeutic. There are no established interacting drugs, safety issues, or classical disease roles, but its measurement in blood may provide information about recent alcohol intake or metabolic state.
