N-acyl phosphatidylethanolamine-specific phospholipase D (NAPE-PLD) is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of N-acyl-phosphatidylethanolamines (NAPEs) to generate bioactive lipid mediators known as N-acylethanolamines or fatty acid ethanolamides (NAEs/FAEs), such as anandamide and oleoylethanolamine. These NAEs are important signaling molecules involved in various physiological processes, including neuronal function, metabolism, and inflammation. It is a major biosynthetic enzyme for NAEs in mammals and regulates levels of endocannabinoids. Alterations or deficiencies in NAPE-PLD can impact neuroprotection.
