01

Overview

N-glycolyl-containing gangliosides are a specific subtype of gangliosides characterized by the presence of N-glycolylneuraminic acid (NeuGc) instead of the more common N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc) found in human tissues. They are complex glycosphingolipids composed of a ceramide lipid backbone (embedded in the plasma membrane), an oligosaccharide chain, and one or more N-glycolylneuraminic acid (NeuGc) residues. The key distinguishing feature is the presence of NeuGc instead of NeuAc, with the NeuGc form containing an additional hydroxyl group compared to the N-acetyl form.
