N-linked glycosylation is a post-translational modification in which complex sugar molecules (glycans) are covalently attached to the nitrogen atom of asparagine (Asn) residues within proteins. This process is highly conserved across eukaryotes and archaea. The resulting glycoproteins play essential roles in protein folding, stability, trafficking, and molecular recognition. It occurs primarily in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and continues with further processing in the Golgi apparatus.
