The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor is a subtype of ionotropic glutamate receptors, which are the primary mediators of excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. It plays a critical role in synaptic plasticity, learning, memory formation, and overall brain development. Abnormal NMDA receptor function has been implicated in various neurological disorders.
