Overview

NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) 1 beta subcomplex subunit 5, mitochondrial (NDUFB5), is an accessory subunit of mitochondrial Complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase), the first and largest enzyme complex of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Located in the inner mitochondrial membrane, NDUFB5 forms part of the transmembrane region of Complex I, which is crucial for transferring electrons from NADH to ubiquinone as part of cellular energy production. While essential for the assembly and structural integrity of Complex I, NDUFB5 itself is not catalytically active. Mutations or dysfunction in NDUFB5 and associated complex I subunits can contribute to mitochondrial and neurodegenerative diseases[1][2][3][5][6][7].
