01

Overview

NADH quinone oxidoreductase is a key enzyme involved in cellular respiration and redox biology. It catalyzes the transfer of electrons from NADH (or sometimes NADPH) to quinones, which are then reduced to hydroquinones. This process is essential for energy production, detoxification, and protection against oxidative stress in various organisms. There are two main types: Type I (NDH-1/Complex I), a large multi-subunit complex found in the mitochondrial inner membrane of eukaryotes and plasma membranes of bacteria, and Type II (NDH-2), a simpler, single-subunit enzyme present in many prokaryotes, plants, fungi, and some lower eukaryotes but absent from mammalian mitochondria.
