Nail matrix cells are specialized epithelial cells located in the nail matrix—the tissue at the base of fingernails and toenails, usually beneath the proximal nail fold and lunula[5][3]. These cells are the main source of new nail plate production, proliferating and differentiating to form the hard nail plate that grows outwards as part of normal nail growth[2][7]. The matrix contains fast-cycling stem cells (sometimes called nail stem cells) responsible for continual growth and regeneration, as well as giving the nail its thickness and width[5][7]. Damage to the matrix or its cells can result in abnormal nail growth, deformity, or permanent loss of the nail[1][8]. While the nail matrix is increasingly studied for its regenerative potential—particularly in digit tip regeneration in mammals—nail matrix cells are not a standard therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or other "drug target" molecule or structure. They form a cell population, not a molecular entity, receptor, or protein, so do not meet strict definitions used for drug discovery targets[2][6]. Note: There is something wrong with this target as a drug discovery/receptor entry: "nail matrix cells" refers to a heterogeneous population of cells in an anatomical structure, not a discrete molecular drug target or receptor. No canonical abbreviation, known drugs, defined mechanisms of drug action, or accepted biomarkers are associated with "nail matrix cells." While matrix cells are crucial for nail growth and are studied in regenerative medicine, they are not considered a classical "target" in pharmacology or molecular biology[2][6].
