Nail matrix tissue

Molecular classification
Other (specialized tissue structure)
01

Overview

The nail matrix is the formative tissue at the base of the nail responsible for creating the cells that eventually harden to form the nail plate[1][3][7]. It contains nerves, blood vessels, and specific cell populations (keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhans cells, Merkel cells)[5]. The matrix is divided into germinal and sterile regions, each contributing uniquely to nail formation and adherence. Damage or disease affecting the matrix compromises nail growth and can produce lasting changes in nail morphology or health[1][5][7]. The matrix itself is not a molecular target for drugs, but its health is critical for normal nail function.

Mechanism of action

None directly applicable; systemic drugs may affect the function or health of the matrix as a secondary effect, leading to changes in nail growth or appearance

03

Biological functions

Generation of new nail cellsNail growth and regenerationDetermining nail plate thickness and curvature
04

Disease associations

Nail disorders (e.g., Beau’s lines, onychodystrophy, onychomycosis, onycholysis, onychocryptosis, nail loss)Diagnostic indicator (changes in matrix health can reflect underlying conditions)
05

Safety considerations

Trauma to the matrix can cause permanent nail loss or deformitySevere matrix injury may result in irreversible changes or hinder regrowth
06

Interacting drugs

None directly; although some systemic drugs may cause nail changes by affecting the matrix (e.g., chemotherapeutics), the matrix itself is not a direct drug target
07

Biomarkers

Nail appearance and growth rate (used as non-specific biomarkers for nutritional status, systemic disease, or exposure to toxins)
