Overview

NAIP pseudogene 1 (NAIPP1) is a non-coding pseudogene related to the NLR family apoptosis inhibitory protein (NAIP) gene, found in a region of the genome with multiple NAIP copies and complex genetic rearrangements. Unlike the functional NAIP gene, which encodes a protein involved in inhibiting apoptosis and innate immune response, NAIPP1 is not believed to encode a functional protein. There is speculation that NAIPP1 may function as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) that helps regulate neuronal NAIP transcripts and modulate inflammasome activation in neurons, but this has not been confirmed experimentally[3]. NAIPP1 is not considered a therapeutic target, nor does it fit in well-established molecular target categories such as receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Most available data focus on the functional NAIP gene, not NAIPP1.
