Overview

NAIP pseudogene 2 (NAIPP2) is a non-functional genomic locus related to the neuronal apoptosis inhibitory protein (NAIP, also known as baculoviral IAP repeat-containing protein 1 or BIRC1)[6]. Unlike protein-coding genes, pseudogenes such as NAIPP2 do not produce active protein; they are remnants of duplication or evolutionary gene loss that can no longer be translated into functional protein[2]. While NAIP itself is involved in inhibiting apoptosis and plays roles in innate immunity, neuromuscular disorders, and cancer, the pseudogene NAIPP2 is not known to have independent biological function, nor is it considered a direct therapeutic target[2][6]. Some pseudogenes elsewhere in the genome can acquire regulatory roles (such as acting as microRNA decoys or antisense transcript regulators), but there is no evidence in current literature that NAIPP2 plays such a role for NAIP or other genes[4][5]. NAIPP2 is included in genomic databases for completeness and comparative genomics, but lacks molecular or clinical significance except as a record of gene family evolution. Misidentification as a classical drug or antibody target would be incorrect, and no approved or experimental drugs are directed against it.
