Nanog homeobox pseudogene 5 (NANOGP5) is one of a large group of NANOG-related pseudogenes found throughout the human genome[3]. The canonical Nanog gene encodes a transcription factor essential for maintaining pluripotency in embryonic stem cells, but NANOGP5 is a processed pseudogene located on chromosome 9q31.1 and is not known to express a functional protein or participate in any biological processes. No evidence currently supports any therapeutic, biomarker, or disease role for NANOGP5; its main significance is as a marker of pseudogene diversity within the NANOG gene family[3].
