Nanog homeobox pseudogene 7 (NANOGP7), also annotated as NANOGP3 in some databases, is a processed pseudogene located in the human genome within the family of NANOG homeobox pseudogenes[6]. NANOGP7 does not encode a functional protein; it lacks introns and results from retrotransposition-driven duplication of functional NANOG. In contrast, the canonical NANOG gene is an important transcription factor regulating pluripotency and self-renewal in embryonic stem cells. Unlike NANOG or the paralog NANOGP8 (which may be transcribed and expressed in some cancer contexts), NANOGP7 possesses no biological function and is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or established therapeutic target[6]. Naming inconsistencies (NANOGP7 versus NANOGP3) and functional confusion between the pseudogenes and the active gene are frequent in the literature[3][6]. Important note: Only the canonical NANOG is a functional protein and therapeutic target; NANOGP7, as a processed pseudogene, is nonfunctional and should not be considered a drug target, biomarker, or disease gene.
