Overview

Nanos C2HC-type zinc finger 1 (NANOS1) is a highly conserved RNA-binding protein that functions as a post-transcriptional regulator, interacting with mRNAs and other RNA-binding proteins (notably Pumilio/PUM2) to repress translation of specific targets essential for germ cell development and maintenance[1][2][3]. NANOS1 contains two CCHC-type zinc finger motifs critical for its RNA-binding and regulatory activities, and is closely linked to male fertility, with mutations causing spermatogenic failure and male infertility[3]. While classified primarily as an RNA-binding regulator/transcription factor, its canonical role in higher eukaryotes is the translational repression in germline cells, and it is not considered a typical receptor, enzyme, or small-molecule drug target[1][2][3].
