Overview

Nasal chondrocytes are the specialized cells residing within the nasal septal cartilage, primarily responsible for the synthesis and maintenance of the extracellular matrix, including type II collagen and proteoglycans (Kafienah et al., 2002, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science). Unlike articular chondrocytes, nasal chondrocytes are derived from the neuroectoderm (neural crest) and exhibit a high, age-independent capacity for proliferation and chondrogenesis (Pelttari et al., 2014, Sci Transl Med). In the context of pharmacology and drug discovery, nasal chondrocytes are not considered a molecular target (such as a receptor or enzyme) but are instead utilized as a cellular source for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. They have been successfully used in clinical trials to create engineered cartilage grafts (N-CHIP) for the repair of articular cartilage defects in the knee, demonstrating superior integration and mechanical properties compared to traditional cell sources (Mumme et al., 2016, The Lancet). While they do not interact with traditional small-molecule drugs as a target, their biological activity is heavily modulated by growth factors like TGF-beta and BMP-2 during therapeutic manufacturing processes.
