Nasal Epithelial Cilia

Molecular classification
Cellular component, Organelle
01

Overview

Nasal epithelial cilia are microscopic, hair-like projections found on the apical surface of columnar epithelial cells lining the nasal passages and paranasal sinuses. They beat in a coordinated, rhythmic manner to propel mucus—along with trapped pathogens and debris—out of the nasal cavity toward the pharynx for clearance. Their primary function is mucociliary clearance, a critical defense mechanism that protects respiratory tissues from inhaled pathogens, toxins, and particulate matter. Dysfunction or structural abnormalities in these cilia can compromise innate immunity, increasing susceptibility to infections and chronic inflammatory diseases.
