Alterations in the composition or diversity of this microbial community have been linked to increased risk for respiratory tract infections during infancy, development or exacerbation of chronic rhinosinusitis, antimicrobial resistance carriage, and even potential neurological effects through impacts on olfactory health[1][2][3][4]. While not itself a molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, recent research has explored therapeutic strategies aimed at restoring healthy nasal microbial communities—such as nasal microbiota transplantation—to treat disease states associated with dysbiosis. These approaches are still experimental; safety concerns regarding donor screening and long-term effects remain under investigation[2].
