Overview

Nasal mucosal epithelial cells line the nasal cavity and form the functional barrier of the respiratory and olfactory mucosa. In the respiratory regions, they are primarily pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelial cells interspersed with goblet cells, which secrete mucus for particle trapping and maintain mucociliary clearance. In the olfactory regions, specialized olfactory sensory neurons and supporting cells enable detection of odors. These cells play key roles in protection, conditioning of inspired air, and chemosensation. While crucial to respiratory defense and overall mucosal function, the term refers to a cellular population and not a distinct therapeutic target or molecular entity[1][2][3][4][5].
