Overview

Nascent polypeptide-associated complex subunit alpha-2 (NACA2) is a protein-coding gene product that functions as part of the nascent polypeptide-associated complex. It binds to emerging nascent polypeptide chains on the ribosome, preventing inappropriate interaction with the signal recognition particle (SRP) and subsequent targeting to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). This action helps ensure that only secretory peptides are directed to the ER and blocks non-secretory chains from mislocalization. NACA2 is primarily located in the cytoplasm and nucleus and is predicted to be involved in unfolded protein binding and protein targeting to membrane. It has also been identified as a skin-associated autoantigen that can induce monocyte activation and Th1 immune responses in connection with allergic and autoimmune phenomena[1][2][5][7].
