Overview

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma-associated antigen (NPC-A) refers to a group of antigens specifically expressed or overexpressed on the surface of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells. These antigens, such as those recognized by monoclonal antibodies FC2 and HNL5, serve as critical targets for both diagnostic and therapeutic applications in NPC, a malignancy strongly linked to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. One specific member of this group, NPC-A-13, is identified as Heat shock factor-binding protein 1 (HSBP1), which negatively regulates the heat shock response by interacting with HSF1. In a therapeutic context, anti-idiotypic antibodies like 2H4 and 5D3 have been developed to mimic these surface antigens, acting as cancer vaccines to stimulate the patient's immune system to recognize and attack NPC cells. These targets are particularly relevant in endemic regions where NPC incidence is high and often presents at advanced stages with significant lymphocyte infiltration.
