Natural killer (NK) cell-mediated cytotoxicity is the process by which NK cells, a subset of innate lymphocytes, recognize and destroy abnormal cells such as virally infected or tumorigenic cells. This function is a cornerstone of the innate immune response and provides rapid defense against threats without prior sensitization. NK cells achieve cytotoxicity through granule exocytosis (releasing perforin and granzymes) and death receptor-mediated apoptosis (using FasL, TRAIL, etc.). This process is tightly regulated by a balance of activating and inhibitory receptor signals.
