Natural killer (NK) cell proliferation refers to the process by which NK cells increase in number through cell division. This biological process is essential for maintaining adequate NK cell populations to provide rapid immune responses against virus-infected cells, tumor cells, and other stressed or abnormal cells. Proliferation is primarily cytokine-driven, notably by IL-15, and influenced by microenvironmental cues. It occurs in the bone marrow and peripheral tissues. Dysregulation can lead to immunodeficiency, increased susceptibility to infections/cancer, autoimmune conditions, or inflammatory diseases.
