A natural killer cell stimulant refers to any molecule, compound, or agent that enhances the activity or function of natural killer (NK) cells. NK cells are a type of lymphocyte in the innate immune system responsible for rapid responses against virally infected cells and tumor cells. They exert their effects through direct cytotoxicity and by secreting cytokines that modulate other immune responses. NK cell stimulants are being explored for therapeutic use against cancers and infectious diseases due to their ability to boost innate immunity. Strategies include administration of recombinant interleukins/cytokines or small molecules/natural products with immunostimulatory properties. Some immunomodulatory drugs already used clinically show part of their efficacy through enhancement of endogenous NK activity.
