Natural killer T (NKT) cell activation refers to the process by which NKT cells, a unique subset of lymphocytes sharing features of both conventional T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, are stimulated to perform their immunological functions. NKT cells are characterized by their expression of a semi-invariant T cell receptor (TCR) that recognizes glycolipid antigens presented by the non-classical MHC class I-like molecule CD1d on antigen-presenting cells. Upon activation, NKT cells rapidly secrete large amounts of immunomodulatory cytokines and exhibit cytotoxic activity, influencing other immune cell types and modulating responses against infections, tumors, autoimmunity, graft rejection, and allergies.
