Overview

NCAM1 antisense RNA 2 (NCAM1-AS2) is a long non-coding natural antisense RNA transcribed from the opposite strand of the NCAM1 gene locus[1]. It does not encode a protein but is thought to regulate the expression of the NCAM1 gene by mechanisms such as transcriptional interference, chromatin modification, or RNA duplex formation[3]. In mouse developmental studies, Ncam1 antisense ncRNAs are expressed in the brain, heart, liver, lung, kidney, and other tissues, with developmental and cell-specific patterns; they may co-localize with Ncam1 mRNA, suggesting a regulatory function[1]. The detailed cellular and disease roles of NCAM1-AS2 in humans are not yet fully characterized, but it is part of the rapidly growing field of antisense lncRNAs, which can play roles in development, differentiation, and potentially pathology including cancer[3].

Disease associations

Potential role in cancer through gene regulation (based on mechanistic data for antisense lncRNAs broadly, but no direct evidence specific to NCAM1-AS2 yet)Potential influence in neurological development/disease (by regulating NCAM1 expression)
