Overview

NDP antisense RNA 1 (NDP-AS1) is a long noncoding antisense RNA transcribed from the NDP locus on the human genome[3]. This molecule does not encode a protein but may regulate expression of its sense gene through various epigenetic and transcriptional mechanisms common to antisense RNAs. Such RNAs typically act by modulating transcription rates, influencing the methylation or chromatin status of the associated sense gene region, or through RNA-RNA interaction affecting mRNA stability and translation efficiency[1][2][3]. While antisense lncRNAs are often involved in diseases by silencing tumor suppressor genes or modulating disease pathways, there is no published evidence (as of September 2025) that NDP-AS1 itself has a definitive disease role or is a target for drugs. The gene is annotated in genetic databases, but further research is needed to clarify its specific biological and clinical significance[3].

Mechanism of action

No drugs target NDP-AS1, but generally, antisense RNAs may be modulated by antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) to downregulate or alter gene expression

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (especially through antisense transcription mechanisms)Potential involvement in chromatin structure and epigenetic regulationPossible participation in imprinting and transcriptional interference
04

Disease associations

Antisense lncRNAs in general are implicated in cancer, imprinting disorders, and gene expression diseases, but no specific disease role for NDP-AS1 documented
