Overview

Necrotic tissue protein substrate refers to the collection of proteins and protein fragments present within necrotic (dead or dying) tissue. Necrosis is a form of cell death resulting from external factors such as infection, trauma, or toxins, leading to unregulated digestion and breakdown of cellular components. The proteins in necrotic tissue are typically denatured, fragmented, or otherwise chemically modified due to the harsh intracellular environment following loss of membrane integrity. These substrates can act as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), which trigger inflammation by activating immune cells through pattern recognition receptors.
