Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT)

Target
NPWT
01

Overview

Negative pressure wound therapy is a medical treatment involving the application of a vacuum-sealed dressing system to the surface of a wound. It works by creating subatmospheric pressure (typically about 125 mmHg below ambient pressure) over the wound site, which removes excess fluid, reduces edema, stabilizes the local wound environment, stimulates granulation tissue formation, and accelerates healing[2][3][5][6][7][8]. NPWT is indicated for acute and chronic wounds that are slow or nonhealing, including diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous ulcers, surgical and traumatic wounds, and burns[3][5][6][7]. The technique requires careful application and wound assessment by trained healthcare professionals, and certain contraindications (e.g., exposed organs, untreated infection) must be excluded prior to use[1][3][5][6][7]. NPWT is not a molecular target or biological entity—it is a physical wound management strategy. Therefore, no drugs directly “interact” with it, and it does not possess biological markers or molecular classifications. If entered as a therapeutic target, the entry should be flagged as incorrect for structured target datasets.
