These components create an overall negative surface charge (zeta potential) that is critical for maintaining the structural integrity of the glycocalyx and regulating molecular trafficking at the cell-environment interface. In healthy mammalian cells, these charges facilitate cell-cell recognition and prevent non-specific aggregation, whereas in many pathogens and cancer cells, the density and composition of these charges are altered to evade the immune system or enhance attachment.
