Overview
The capsular polysaccharide of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W is a key virulence factor that enables the bacterium to evade the host immune response. It is composed of repeating units containing sialic acid residues linked to galactose (α-D-Gal-(1→4)-α-Neu5Ac-(2→6)-α-D-Glc). This polysaccharide is a target for vaccines designed to prevent invasive meningococcal disease.
