The capsular polysaccharide of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W-135 is a major virulence factor responsible for immune evasion and invasive disease. It is the target of conjugate vaccines, which induce protective immunity by stimulating antibody production against this polysaccharide. The W-135 capsule's unique structure, encoded by genes within the *cps* locus, allows for serogroup-specific identification and vaccine development.
The W-135 capsular polysaccharide, when presented as a conjugate vaccine, elicits an antibody response in the host that neutralizes the N. meningitidis serogroup W-135 bacteria, preventing infection.
