Target intelligence / Profile preview
The capsular polysaccharide of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup Y is a complex carbohydrate polymer composed of repeating units of sialic acid (N-acetylneuraminic acid) and glucose. It is a major virulence factor that protects the bacterium from phagocytosis and complement-mediated killing. It is the target of MenACWY conjugate vaccines, which induce antibodies that provide protection against invasive disease caused by serogroup Y N. meningitidis. The cps locus is responsible for the biosynthesis and surface expression of this capsule.
Vaccine-induced antibody production targeting the capsule, leading to complement-mediated killing and opsonization of bacteria.
