Neisseria meningitidis capsular polysaccharide X (MenX CPS) is a surface-expressed carbohydrate polymer that forms the capsule of N. meningitidis serogroup X strains. The capsule is the main virulence determinant for this bacterium, enabling it to evade host immune responses and cause invasive diseases such as septicemia and meningitis. It is composed of repeating units of (α-1→4)-linked N-acetylglucosamine 1-phosphate. Antibodies targeting MenX CPS can confer protection against disease; thus, this molecule serves as both a virulence factor and an important vaccine target.
