Target intelligence / Profile preview

Meningococcal group A capsular polysaccharide (MenA-CPS)

Target
MenA-CPS
Molecular classification
Polysaccharide antigen, Bacterial capsule, Other
01

Overview

The Meningococcal group A capsular polysaccharide is a surface polymer unique to *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup A, made up of O-acetylated α1→6-linked N-acetyl-D-mannosamine-1-phosphate units, with important acetate groups at position 3 and 4 introduced by CsaC acetyltransferase[1][3]. This capsule is essential for the bacterium's ability to avoid immune detection and cause disease, and its antigenic properties are exploited in vaccine formulations that provide immunity to group A meningococcal infection[3][6]. The presence and structure of this polysaccharide distinguish serogroup A from other meningococcal groups[1][2].

Mechanism of action

Vaccines: Induce adaptive immune response (antibody-mediated), resulting in protective immunity

03

Biological functions

Immune evasionVirulence factorAntigenicity (elicits specific antibody responses)Immune response activation (via vaccination)
04

Disease associations

Infection
05

Safety considerations

Hypersensitivity/allergic reactions to vaccine componentsRare risk of autoimmunity or adverse reactions associated with polysaccharide-based vaccinesPolysaccharide-only vaccines can be weakly immunogenic in infants and young children, but conjugate vaccines overcome this limitation
06

Interacting drugs

Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenAfriVac; others formulated with MenA polysaccharide)
07

Biomarkers

Anti-MenA capsular polysaccharide antibody titers (used to monitor vaccine response and efficacy in clinical studies)
