The Neisseria meningitidis group C capsular polysaccharide is a high-molecular-weight carbohydrate polymer that forms the outer capsule of serogroup C strains of *N. meningitidis*. It is composed of α(2→9)-linked N-acetylneuraminic acid residues. The capsule is a major virulence factor, enabling the bacterium to evade host immune defenses. It is also a key target for vaccine development, with conjugate vaccines proving highly effective in preventing serogroup C meningococcal disease by eliciting protective antibodies.
Antibody-mediated opsonization and complement activation leading to bacterial clearance. Conjugate vaccines elicit T-cell dependent B cell response, inducing long-term immunological memory.
