The Neisseria meningitidis group C polysaccharide antigen is an essential virulence determinant forming part of the bacterial capsule. Its structure—composed mainly of α(2→9)-linked sialic acids—enables immune evasion. It serves as a critical target for licensed vaccines that prevent invasive disease caused by serogroup C strains through induction of protective antibodies. Genes encoding its biosynthesis and export reside at a defined chromosomal locus termed cps.
