The Neisseria meningitidis group C polysaccharide capsule is a surface-expressed carbohydrate structure that serves as the primary virulence factor for this bacterium. The capsule enables the organism to evade host immune responses, particularly by resisting antibody/complement-mediated killing and inhibiting phagocytosis. It is also the key antigenic determinant used to classify N. meningitidis into serogroups, with group C being one of six serogroups (A, B, C, W, X, Y) responsible for most invasive disease in humans. The group C capsular polysaccharide consists of repeating units of O-acetylated (α1→6)-linked N-acetyl-D-mannosamine-1-phosphate.
Antibodies targeting the capsular polysaccharide promote complement-mediated killing and opsonization.
