The Neisseria meningitidis group W-135 capsular polysaccharide antigen is a group-specific carbohydrate structure found on the surface of N. meningitidis bacteria belonging to serogroup W-135. This antigen forms part of the bacterium’s capsule, which is a key virulence factor and the basis for serogroup classification. The capsule is composed of polysaccharides that protect N. meningitidis from host immune responses, particularly phagocytosis. For serogroup W-135, the capsular polysaccharide consists primarily of repeating units of sialic acid derivatives. It is a key target for vaccine development against invasive disease.
