The Neisseria meningitidis group W capsular polysaccharide antigen is a surface-expressed carbohydrate polymer that forms the capsule surrounding the bacterium. This capsule is a major virulence determinant, enabling the pathogen to evade host immune responses and cause invasive diseases. It is a key target for vaccines designed to prevent invasive meningococcal disease. Antibodies targeting this antigen confer protection against disease.
Vaccines induce production of antibodies that bind to the Group W capsular polysaccharide, promoting complement-mediated killing and/or opsonization and phagocytosis of N. meningitidis bacteria.
